In this unique 6-day challenge, participants tackle a common problem faced by students in Al-Ahsa schools, as part of the municipality’s efforts for Al-Ahsa to become a UNICEF-certified child-friendly city. It refers to a city, town, or community where the voices, needs, priorities, and rights of students are a fundamental component in public policies, programs, and decisions.

Al-Ahsa is a major urban city in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province that is taking active steps towards becoming the first Saudi city to attain this commendable status. Students in Al-Ahsa, and in most of the world, often wait for their caregivers to pick them up after school. Therefore, the focus of this Tanween Challenge is the issue of students waiting period during after-school pick up hours. During this time, they may be required to wait in ill-equipped spaces where not all students are within the sight of supervision. This may lead to an unsafe or frustrating waiting experience for the students.

Participants in this challenge will work together to devise a solution that best organizes and safely addresses this pivotal issue. The solution that emerges ideally follows international standards. Designers and decision-makers are invited to participate in this hands-on challenge and engage with students who will serve as the decision-makers in this interactive event.
