Mourad and Arlette
Mourad and Arlette Boutros are leading figures in the creative industry and have more than 40 years of expertise. They are classically trained Arabic calligraphers, specialising in projects that combine traditional calligraphy techniques with new technologies. Authors of the acclaimed books Arabic for Designers and Talking about Arabic, their work can be found in major institutions throughout the world. If you have noticed a bilingual logo, read an Arabic newspaper, watched an Arabic television channel or looked at an Arabic road sign, it is likely to be a Boutros trademark.
From Al Arabiya news channel, the MBC Group, the BBC Arabic news channel, Almarai, Alquraishi, the Brunei mosque, Al Jazeera and Al-Hayat newspaper, to the streets of Lebanon, Dubai and Saudi Arabia – their letters are everywhere.
Boutros is a London-based type foundry and design agency committed to raising the standards of Arabic typography. The Boutros font library is the oldest in the Middle East. It was inaugurated by the Letraset sheets of BoutrosAdvertisersNaskh in 1977 (No1 pirated font worldwide), a font now used ubiquitously on highway road and traffic signs throughout the Middle East. This was followed by Boutros MB in 1985 as the Mercedes Benz Arabic corporate font and Boutros Advertising, an Apple system font in 1988. In 2000, IMB adopted a range of Boutros Arabic typefaces as core fonts.
