Zahrah Alghamdi

Zahrah Alghamdi

City of Thorns highlights the connection between nature, humanity and the impact of climate change on our cities. Through symbolic materials, Alghamdi urges us to strive towards a sustainable future. The thorns in the artwork symbolize the resilience of nature, inspiring us to protect the environment for generations to come.

Zahrah Alghamdi's work explores memory and history through the lens of traditional architecture. Her site-specific work sees the laborious and meticulous process in which she assembles particles of earth, clay, rocks, leather and water. The concept of "embodied memory" influences the way in which Alghamdi crafts her artwork to translate themes of cultural identity, memory and loss.

Born in 1977 in Al Baha, Saudi Arabia, Alghamdi graduated from King Abdulaziz University with a degree in Islamic Arts. She holds a master’s degree in Contemporary Crafts from Coventry University in England, as well as a PhD in Design and Visual Arts.
