Uthman Taha is widely regarded as one of the world’s preeminent Arabic calligraphers. He is responsible for writing the Mushaf Al-Madinah, which is one of the most recognized copies of the Holy Qur’an and the most widely distributed throughout the Islamic world. Born in 1934 in Aleppo, Syria, Taha learned calligraphy with great Syrian and Turkish masters. His father was also a skilled calligrapher, who used the Ruq’ah script. When he moved to Damascus for university study, Taha began to learn other scripts, including Thuluth and Naskh, in which he is a master. He received his calligraphy certificate from master calligrapher Hamed Al-Amadi in 1973. A Saudi national, Taha has lived in Madinah since 1988 and is the official calligrapher of the Holy Qur’an at the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Qur’an in Madinah. Taha has written out the Holy Qur’an in full 12 times.
