The Language and The City

Abdullah Al-Othman

An art book documenting the experience of language and the city, and the reduction of the city to its visual cultural elements and architectural aspects; as such, this book is an artistic manifestation of the city. The book pays particular attention to the study of the meanings of signs and symbols, the history of people, the development of collective and individual culture, and the search for the use of advertisements and banners. Shifting the city’s context changes its meaning: It derives its identity from the language of its inhabitants, as the words express the names and the basic components of the landscape. In this process, the site becomes an identity, rather than a narrative background for the life of each of its inhabitants.

Intimate Strangers

Aziz Mohammad

This novel follows the life of a young architect over ten years, as he seeks to overcome the ruins of his past through architecture. The events take place in the contemporary city of al-Khobar, dealing with the rapid changes in the region, which are reshaping the identity of its residents, their location in the city, and the nature of gender roles. The novel recounts the spatial aesthetics of the Eastern Province, while exploring the multiple connections between literature and architecture. It also analyzes the connection of contemporary phenomena with the past to highlight the privacy of our collective memory. During this, the novel tells an interesting story, about characters connected to each other by deeper documents than they thought, which opens our eyes to the virtues of meditation, self-review and dealing with the people and places that surround us with love and care.
