Carmelo Zappulla, an Italian-born architect, is the founder and managing director of the Barcelona-based studio External Reference. A graduate of the University of Palermo with a doctorate from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Zappulla has consistently focused on innovation, new technologies and sustainable design. His firm employs a "cradle to cradle" approach, promoting architecture that aligns with the principles of a circular economy. Notable projects include the exhibition design for the Spanish Pavilion at EXPO Dubai 2020, and “Escaleras y Mirador Vela,” a walkable architectural façade on Barcelona's seafront. Zappulla's design ethos integrates traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge digital technology, thanks to a broad international network of collaborations. His studio's work has garnered several awards, such as the Architecture Master Prize in 2019 and multiple recognitions in 2022, including the Best Activity/Interactive Pavilion award from Exhibitor Magazine's World Expo Award. In academia, he directs the Master in Experiential Design program at LCI Barcelona and teaches at IAAC Barcelona. His research and academic contributions have appeared in scientific journals and exhibitions worldwide. His first monograph will be published in 2023. With a portfolio ranging from retail spaces like the innovative WOW concept store in Madrid to gastronomic interiors, Zappulla stands as a multifaceted force in modern architecture.
