Herwig Baumgartner, an Austrian native, is a licensed architect and principal/founder of the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Baumgartner Architecture. His internationally recognized architecture firm is operating at the forefront of contemporary design and its design process can be described as driven by digital techniques and advanced computation that utilizes new technologies and material resources. Baumgartner’s work consistently pushes the boundaries of architecture and urban design by experimenting with new spatial concepts, intensifying existing urban landscapes in pursuit of a visionary aesthetic that encompasses all fields of design. He received his diploma in Music and New Media from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Baumgartner has lectured and conducted workshops nationally and internationally and is a professor teaching architecture and design at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) where he also is the applied studies coordinator. Prior to founding Baumgartner Architecture, he worked as a senior associate and project architect at Gehry Partners and collaborated with artist Richard Serra. Baumgartner’s work has been exhibited in different museums and galleries around the world such as, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His work has been widely published and discussed in magazines and newspapers such as The Architectural Record. Baumgartner Architecture is an award-winning firm and has received awards such as the Maxine Frankel Award for design research, the A+ Award for sustainability, and the Blueprint Magazine award for “Best Design Innovative Project”.
